At Lake Highlands Tutoring, we believe students learn best in safe, familiar environments. Students often are most comfortable in their homes, and for this reason, LH Tutoring founder Ashley Smith began in home tutoring with elementary age students. As LH Tutoring grows, Ashley continues to seek talented, experienced current and former teachers to work alongside her with local families. LH Tutoring offers families in the Dallas area friendly, professional educators who cater lessons to each individual student’s learning style and needs. We are your neighbors who want to serve our community by coaching students to reach their fullest educational potential.
The LH Tutoring Advantage
Pre-K to Middle School levels served - We comprehensively serve students from Pre-K to Middle School, with a concentration on the following core subjects: reading, writing, and math.
We’ll come to you - We meet elementary students in the comfort of their own homes where there is less distraction from other kids and tutors.
Private & group - We offer both private and small group sessions. These sessions are held in quiet public locations such as libraries or coffee shops. Convenient online tutoring is also available to students.
Customized to best suit you - We professionally assess each student and customize tutoring sessions that focus on their unique academic challenges. We do not use a predesigned track curriculum.
Instilling confidence - We focus on questions directly from previous STAAR tests for students needing STAAR test prep. Our strategy is to address key concepts students will see on the upcoming test while also building future testing confidence and performance.
Test prep solutions - We offer ISEE test prep sessions designed to prepare students to perform at their highest level on these exams.
High tutor standards & vetting - We require advanced qualifications and background checks from all of our tutors.
LHT Services
Reading
We believe that reading is the foundation for all aspects of education. Our instruction begins with phonics focused methods with our youngest students. Our goal is to go beyond a reader’s ability to read in order to assist them in understanding grammatic thought. Reading comprehension seeps into every aspect of a student’s academic experience. We see reading as a life skill that will carry a student beyond the classroom as they grow towards their life’s ambitions.
Writing
Writing skills and interest formulate when a student is exposed to examples of exceptional writing. It is here that students formulate thoughts which the tutor assists the student in expressing on paper. This allows students to create their own well-conceived and articulated sentences, paragraphs, and papers. An individualistic approach is a benefit our tutors offer that if often not found in a classroom setting.
Math
LH Tutoring focuses on math sense and comprehension. Students need confidence in their ability to approach mathematical concepts and plan their approach to a problem before attempting it. We want math to be tangible and applicable to a student’s everyday life. When a student understands the “why” behind math, it instills confidence and allows the student to take ownership over what they are learning.
Science
Understanding science opens up the physical world to students in a way that no other educational concept does. The goal is to engage students in real life application based on their personal interests. Our tutors understand that real world scientific application is the key to helping students in concept comprehension.
Foreign Language
At no other point in history has our world been more connected than it is today. Foreign languages tell stories other than our own. It can open up a world of sights, smells, and experiences students may not otherwise encounter. Our foreign language tutors prioritize imparting knowledge and culture in assisting students as they grow in language comprehension. Their passion for travel and historical perspective flow into their lessons, creating a rich educational experience that is often neglected in a foreign language program.
Test Prep
From Pre-K through Middle School levels, test taking is the most frequently used method for evaluating a student’s comprehension. For this reason, LH Tutoring offers help with test taking skills that are designed to assist students in focusing on key standardized testing concepts. Our test taking preparation is strategic, often using questions from previous exams to vet out for each student which areas require additional focus and to reinforce a student’s belief that they can achieve their highest scores possible. We want confident, prepared students who are excited to show their skills on test day.
